Getting A License

LARSA 2000 requires a license to run. Licenses come in three forms: standalone dongles (parallel or USB port keys), license servers for networked environments, and standalone LarsaLicense files for single users, temporary licenses, and demos.

More information about the LarsaLicense files are provided on the LarsaLicense Instructions page.

Preparing To Install

Locate the download page on our website for the latest version of LARSA 2000. You probably came here from that page.

LARSA 2000 requires that up to four software update packages be installed on computers before the first time LARSA is run. These packages only need to be installed once on any computer.

  • Microsoft .NET Framework: This is currently only necessary for a small number of features of LARSA 2000 so it is optional, but LARSA 2000 will depend more on it in the future. Computers acting as a network license server for LARSA that will not be used by engineers do not need the .NET Framework update.
  • LARSA Runtime Components Update: This is required for all LARSA 2000 installations.
  • Sentinel System Drivers: The Sentinel System Drivers must be installed if a USB or parallel-port dongle will be attached to the computer as part of the LARSA License. Dongles are used for most standalone installations and for many server installations in a network environment. If you have not been sent a dongle, you do not need to install this package. The package only needs to be installed on computers that a dongle will be directly attached to.
  • Sentinel License Manager: The license manager is required in networked environments on the server computer.

Links to the downloads for these packages are on the download page. Download the necessary packages.

Also download the main LARSA 2000 setup program. It is the big download link that looks like LARSA2000_{version}.exe.

Before proceeding to the steps below, install the software update packages that are necessary for your system (the Microsoft .NET Framework, LARSA Runtime Components, and Sentinel System Drivers). You may be asked to reboot the computer after each step.

Standalone Setup

Standalone setup is for users with single-user hardware locks (printer port or USB dongles) or LarsaLicense license files. The .NET Framework and Runtime Components are required one-time software updates. The Sentinel System Drivers are also required if a hardware lock will be used.

If your license requires a hardware lock, put the lock on the printer port or USB port of your computer.

Run the installation file that you downloaded from our website. These files are generally named LARSA2000_{version}.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions and complete the installation.

If you will be using a LarsaLicense file, run the License Configuration program from your start menu: Start > Programs > LARSA 2000 > License Configuration. Ensure "Larsa License" has been checked. If your license file has been e-mailed to you, click Import and open the license file. Otherwise, click Download, enter your Larsa website login information, and click Get License. If multiple licenses are available to you, choose the appropriate license.

Double click on the LARSA 2000 icon on your desktop to run the program.

Upgrading a Standalone Installation

To upgrade LARSA 2000 in a standalone installation (see the previous section), follow these steps.

Step 1: Uninstall LARSA 2000
Open the Start menu and go to Control Panel (in Windows 98/ME, it is under Settings). Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Choose LARSA 2000 and click Uninstall. Sentinel System Drivers do not need to be uninstalled.
Step 2: Reinstall LARSA 2000
Follow the steps in the previous section to install LARSA 2000.

Network Server Installation

Perform these steps on a computer that is operating as the network server for LARSA 2000 in your workgroup environment. These steps will require a reboot of the server.

The required one-time software updates are the Runtime Components and License Manager. If a USB or parallel-port hardware lock will be used, the Sentinel System Drivers are also required. Perform those installations first, if necessary.

Step 1.
Put your hardware network security lock on the printer port or USB port of your server computer.
Step 2.
Copy the license file (lservrc) supplied to you by LARSA to the directory C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\SentinelLM711\English. This computer is running the Sentinel LM License Manager. The hostname or IP address of this server is the License Server Name.
Step 3.
Double-click the installation file that you downloaded from our website. These files are generally named LARSA2000_{version}.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions. The directory to which you install LARSA will need to be accessible to the client computers through a UNC path so that automatic updates can work.
Step 4.
Once the installation is complete, double click on the LARSA 2000 icon on the desktop and make sure that it opens. If it does not open, contact LARSA technical support.
Step 5.
Use Windows Explorer to share the LARSA 2000 program directory on the server if it is not already shared. The path must be shared so that it is available as a standard UNC path, such as \\ServerName\Path\To\LARSA, and not a mapped network drive. This is your Auto Update Path.
Step 6.
For each network client that will use LARSA 2000, perform the steps below.

Network Client Installation

Perform these steps on each computer that is operating as a network client of LARSA 2000 in your workgroup environment.

The required one-time software updates are the .NET Framework and Runtime Components.

Step 1.
Double-click the installation file that you downloaded from our website. These files are generally named LARSA2000_{version}.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 2.
After LARSA 2000 is installed, run the program LarsaEnvSetup.exe in the directory C:\Program Files\LARSA 2000, or wherever you installed LARSA 2000.
Step 3.
Ensure Sentinel LM (Network) is checked. Enter the License Server Name (the hostname or IP address of the computer running the Sentinel LM License Manager) and the Auto Update Path (the UNC path to the directory where LARSA 2000 is installed on the server).
Step 4.
Close LarsaEnvSetup and double click on the LARSA 2000 icon on the desktop to make sure that it runs.

Upgrading Client/Server Installations

To upgrade LARSA 2000 in a networked environment, only the server needs to be manually upgraded. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Uninstall LARSA 2000 from the Server
On the server, open the Start menu and go to Control Panel (in Windows 98/ME, it is under Settings). Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Choose LARSA 2000 and click Uninstall. Sentinel License Manager and System Drivers do not need to be uninstalled.
Step 2: Reinstall LARSA 2000 on the Server
Follow the steps in the network server installation section to install LARSA 2000 on the server, but you do not need to update the lservrc file.
Client Updates
Client machines will automatically update to the latest version of LARSA 2000 the next time LARSA 2000 is started on the client machine. Clients will update by downloading the necessary files from the server installation.

Installation Troubles?

If you are having problems installing LARSA or starting LARSA for the first time, please read the following. If none of these solutions help, try reinstalling LARSA. If that does not solve the problem, contact us at 1-800-LARSA-01.

Standalone Installation

If you are told LARSA could not find a security device, ensure you properly installed the Sentinel System Driver and that your hardware plug is securely connected to your parallel or USB port.

Network Server Installation

If you are told LARSA could not find a license, ensure that the "lservnt.exe" service is running. If not, reinstall the Sentinel License Manager.

Ensure your "lservrc" file is located in the same directory as the "lservnt.exe" program file. It should not be located in the LARSA 2000 installation path.

Network Client Installation

If you are told that LARSA could not find a license, ensure that no anti-virus programs are running. Anti-virus programs may prevent the client computer from contacting the server.

Run the program LarsaEnvSetup.exe in the directory C:\Program Files\LARSA 2000, or wherever you installed LARSA 2000. Ensure Sentinel LM (Network) and the correct values are entered for the License Server name and Auto Update Path.
